Meadows Center to host Spring Lake Earth Day Festival

The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment will hold its annual Spring Lake Earth Day Festival Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival, which will be held at the headwaters of the San Marcos River, is a free, family-friendly event that allows the community to join together to celebrate the earth.

Adams ride trike to Tomball for VFW state meeting

On Friday, April 8, Dave and Bernie Adams rode their trike motorcycle as part of the State VFW Motorcycle Riders Group Spring Meeting in Tomball. The Adams are part of the VFW Unit 32 Riders Group from Geronimo and met up with VFW Unit 30 from Helotes. The groups met up in Seguin, from where they continued their journey to Tomball. There, they met with the rest of the Texas state riding groups for a 200-mile ride through Houston and Bryan. On Sunday, all groups gathered for their meeting before Units 32 and 30 returned home.

Persian Shield so beautifully exotic: ‘This is the life’

Recently I stumbled across a plant recipe called ‘This is the Life.’ Not only was it a collection of some of my favorite plants, but was like a wake-up call to an old favorite, the Persian Shield. Known botanically as Strobilanthes dyerianus, it is native to Myanmar and has 8-inchlong leaves that are iridescent in shades of purple, lilac and pink with purplemaroon on the undersides. If those colors aren’t awesome enough, the foliage looks as though it has a light coat of silver electroplated to the leaf.
