Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China.

Last year’s February Yard of the Month was in print just before severe freezing weather, as San Marcos residents struggled with power outages and water issues, and again in 2022 Spring Lake Garden Club’s yard of the month has avoided a devastating freeze. At the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Wilson Street, the home of Amy and John Thomaides features hardy green yuccas and blooming irises near the entry, and even a patch of bluebonnets near a clump of chile pequins in the sunny side yard. Having lived in San Marcos for almost 30 years, Amy is savvy about the trials and triumphs of gardening in Central Texas and tends a landscape suited to our climate. The Thomaides’ front yard and parking area is separated from side yards by a sturdy seethrough fence of wood and hog panel.

Recently a post came across my Facebook that read today is January the 74th and by George, I agree and I want change. I need blanket flowers or gaillardias. Okay, I know February is too early, but let this serve notice: Start sourcing the award-winning ‘Heat It Up Blanket Flowers’ for spring planting.

In January 2015, a handful of people in San Marcos learned of a nationwide program called GriefShare, a support group for those who have lost a spouse, a child or a friend. As they personally understood the mental and physical trauma of losing a loved one, whether it was anticipated or a complete surprise, the group decided they would welcome the opportunity to begin the program in San Marcos.

One bird that really brightens my day is the northern cardinal.

“My journey” for the next two weeks is written by Bill Oxley, a guest columnist. He gave his testimony recently with a group of pilgrims at a Walk to Emmaus weekend and has agreed to share his presentation on “Changing Our World.”
