Texas State’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” Feb. 8-13 in the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre.
Under the direction of third-year MFA director Martin J. Asprey, Texas State’s production hones in on the characters’ trauma and the effects of post-traumatic stress. The play follows Macbeth, a soldier, who receives a prophecy of becoming king. His wife manipulates his temptation into reality, as he slaughters those in line for the throne. The project has been over two years in the making after it began in a director/ designer collaboration class Asprey’s first year at Texas State.
Set in the 11th century, Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” charts the rise and fall of the Scottish Thane as he pursues the throne with tragic ambition. The popular play is loosely based on a real 11th-century Scottish king, who — like the title character — commits regicide to usurp the crown.
Macbeth opens Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre and runs through a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13. Individual tickets start at $20 for adults and $10 for students.
