“The Getaway” Returns to San Marcos

The Indigenous Cultures Institute, in partnership with the city of San Marcos, is hosting an event that honors and shares the cultural heritage of Native Americans indigenous to Texas and northern Mexico.

For Terri Hendrix, life is art. It is obvious listening to the Grammy award winner, but it was also a trait that ran in the family.

We at KZSM are happy to welcome yet another unique addition to our eclectic lineup of music programming. “Sundays Free with JJB” airs Sundays 11 p.m. to Mondays 1 a.m. Host Justin James Bridges, a national touring musician from Texas, features new music, stories from his tours, and conversations with artists and creatives.

There are so many dogs (and cats) that need fur-ever homes, and the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter works hard to ensure that each dog is well taken care of and finds the companionship that they so desperately crave. Man’s best friends thrive with their humans. San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson, honored the shelter and its animals by proclaiming October, 2023 as Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Meet Jaelen, an adventurous 4-year-old Retriever mix with a heart of gold. He is the shelter’s longest staying dog, having been at the shelter for 398 days. He enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors during his Dog Day’s Out outings.

Get ready to dance back in time to the “groovy 70s” as the San Marcos High School Rattler alumni from this era come together for its reunion, called the “That 70’s Reunion Show,” on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the LBJ Center on the campus of Texas State University.

Experts say it signals a growing economy

In 1995, when local music legend, attorney, and entrepreneur Lucky Tomblin produced the Sacred Springs Powwow in San Marcos, Native Americans in Texas knew they had a home where the culture of the First People of the Americas was welcomed, celebrated and valued. Fifteen years later, the powwow’s standard was raised again by the Indigenous Cultures Institute, when representatives from the nonprofit visited Tomblin and his wife Becky and asked permission to reinstate the Sacred Springs Powwow as an annual event. Now in its thirteenth year, the powwow is scheduled for October 7 and 8 at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment.
