Sandra Kabealo Stouffer
Sandra Kabealo Stouffer
Sandy was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1942 to John and Mildred Kabealo. She graduated from Upper Arlington High School, and attended Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, where she met her husband, Willard “Bill” Stouffer. They married during her senior year, and spent the next few years in Durham, North Carolina.
In 1970, they moved to San Marcos, Texas where they raised children Cinnamon and Brewer. While Bill was a professor at Texas State in the Political Science department, Sandy earned two degrees there. She completed her BS in Education, a Master’s Degree in Curriculum, and a Gifted/Talented Education Certificate.
Sandy shared her passion for creativity and children’s literature with her students, young and old. She began her teaching career at Crockett Elementary in 1978, and went on to become a major contributor to the growth of gifted and talented programs in both the San Marcos and Seguin school districts, retiring in 2001.
Sandy became a recognized member of the gifted and talented education community, through presentations at state and national conferences. For a few semesters she taught the next generation of educators at Texas State. A sample from course evaluations: “Awesome instructor. By far Mrs. Stouffer is the best professor I have had in college. She really cares about her students.”
Sandy treasured summers with extended family in Ohio. She corresponded with many dear friends and relatives throughout her life. She shared her imagination, encouragement, curiosity and love of reading with grandchildren: Aidan, Wyatt, Will, Beckett and Harper.
Sandy is missed by her loving family, dear friends, and countless students — all of whom will remember her warm and giving spirit.
On Saturday Jan. 26, we will celebrate Sandy Stouffer’s life at the Embassy Suites San Marcos Conference Center. A 10 a.m. reception followed by a service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please honor her life’s work by bringing children’s books or sending donations to the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center.
