On August 5, 2019, surrounded by loved ones, Gabriel Abel Cruz was called to his heavenly home. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, lost his battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel S. and Frances V. Cruz, his nephew Rene Cruz, his nieces Crystal Castaneda and Peggy Cruz. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Emilia Cruz, son Gabriel Allen Cruz, step-children Michael Rodriguez and Jennifer Mendez (Fermin), granddaughter Aubrey Cruz, Liliana Grace Rodriguez, grandson Noah Michael Rodriguez, brother, Richard Cruz (Estella), and sisters Mary Lou Castaneda (Hector) and Nelda Mendoza (Roy). He also had numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. 

Abel was born and raised in San Marcos TX. A graduate of SMHS Class of 1974 and also attended SWT. A lifelong resident of San Marcos, he also worked locally at UPS and later retired after 27 years of employment. He had a passion for playing golf, spending time with family and friends, and most importantly, living life to the fullest. He was a former member of Pan American Golf Association and the local L.U.L.A.C chapter. He always had a zest for life. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, receiving uplifting drawings from his granddaughter Aubrey and appreciated delicious food and dining out.   He never saw the bad in anyone only goodness.  He will be missed by his loving family and many friends who loved him.

Visitation will be held at 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019, at Thomason Funeral Home Chapel San Marcos. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in San Marcos. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. also at St. John’s Catholic Church.  Interment will follow at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Martindale, TX. Pallbearers will be James Cruz, Mario Garza, Greg Juarez, Pete Guerrero, Mark Guerrero, and Danny Ortega.  Honorary Pallbearers will be John Rodriguez, Hector Castaneda, Ronnie Moczygemba, and Gilbert Vasquez.  For more information and to sign the online guest registry please visit www.thomasonfuneralhomel.com
