Jerry loved the Lord, his family and his friends. As a young man Jerry attended the Ocker Brethren Church and Holland High School. Jerry was a four-year lettermen in football, basketball, baseball and track. He received numerous accolades in each sport. His senior season he was the football MVP of the district, on the Super Cen-Tex Team and on the KCEN TV Team. During his high school tenure, Jerry excelled academically and was also an FFA President, class treasurer, vice president of his junior class and Class Sweetheart/Favorite.
Jerry married Elizabeth Miller on December 23, 1961. He graduated from SMU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1963 where he played football for the Mustangs as a quarterback. Jerry was an insurance salesman in San Marcos for over 45 years.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he was the Men’s Club President and worked with Vacation Bible School groups. Jerry was also involved with the Jaycees, Masonic Lodge, Heritage Association, Meals on Wheels and spearheaded the move of the San Marcos Softball Complex to its current location. Jerry was an avid softball player up until he was 50. He also coached T-Ball, Little League, Pony League and softball for his children and other children in the community. Jerry was a well-respected member of this community who would do anything for anyone.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife Elizabeth.
He is survived by his son, DeWayne; his daughter and husband Cindy and James; his daughter Kim; sister and husband Kay and Doyle Knight; his grandchildren Sadie and Connor McDonald. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 28 from 6-8:00pm at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos. The service will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 29 at First United Methodist Church in San Marcos with a reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the FUMC parking fund, Hays County Food Bank or the charity of your choice.
