David 'Dave' Wayne Thompson Sr October 3, 1959 April 21, 2024
David 'Dave' Wayne Thompson Sr., cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away April 21, 2024, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Dave was born on October 3, 1959, in Savannah, Georgia. Although not a native Texan, he got here as fast as he could! He spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones in San Marcos, Texas.
David's life was one of service and adventure. Shortly after graduating from Lanier High School in Austin, Texas, he joined the U.S. Army, setting a foundation for what would be a commendable 38-year career. His military journey took him from the barracks of Germany to the diverse landscapes of Louisiana, Texas, Oregon, and Wyoming. His dedication to his country was unwavering, as evidenced by multiple assignments and promotions, including ranks of Command Leader, First Sergeant and ultimately CW2 - WS 12 Inspection Section Supervisor for the maintenance/mechanic shop at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. The military roles he held inspired those around him.
Dave and Connie were married at Texas Old Town on November 24, 2013. The love they shared was unending. Together they enjoyed horseback riding, fishing at the Texas coast, building and castles at South Padre Island with the San Marcos Suns, listening to tunes by The Stringtown Band, camping, trail rides, dancing, going to rodeos, barbequing, catering, hosting game nights, playing dominoes with Shelly and Sean, and visiting with their 'Family on the Hill.' Dave was the love of Connie's life and brought her joy and unconditional love. He accepted her children, Cassie Lane and Torrie Blake as his own. Dave brought about the love, joy and laughter to the group during family events. Up until the end, Dave and Connie regularly attended Texas State University football games with stepdaughter Cassie; Dave was her special 'Bonus Dad.'
Beyond his military service, David was a Godly man of many passions. Dave was an active member of the San Marcos Community Church had had a strong connection with his fellow brothers in Christ, who met on Fridays for their weekly Prayer Groups. Dave attended when he could. A devoted fan of NASCAR, he never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite driver, Chase Elliott, #9, especially when joined by his best buddy, Aaron Ray Baker. From March to October, their camaraderie was a testament to the joy of shared interests. David's love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for hunting on the Mountain View Ranch in South Texas alongside of friends, Robert and Scott. He loved participating in rifle matches, fishing, camping, and barbecuing with good friend, Bryan Richards. Dave won multiple BBQ championships, of which he was very proud. Dave and Connie together catered many graduations, weddings, car shows, birthdays, anniversaries and other family events throughout the years with the help of their stepdaughter, Cassie Lane. He found solace in the quiet moments of searching for historical artifacts with his friend Randy Woodard, and he could often be found regaling others with tales of his discoveries with joy and laughter. David's storytelling was a gift he shared freely, loudly and with excitement, much to the delight of his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Connie Martin- Thompson, son David 'D' Wayne Thompson Jr., and stepdaughters Amber Maria Drabek, Cassie Lane Martin, and Torrie Blake Martin, stepmother Barbara Mulder Thompson, in-laws John and June Doster and sister- in-law Pam Doster Whitley and husband Rick. He was a brother to Stephen Edward Thompson and wife Gina, as well as to his 'other brothers,' Steven Don Logan and wife Joyce, and David Bruce Logan and wife Gayla Sue. David's legacy also lives on through his adoring nieces and nephews, including Travis Doster Whitley, Lauren Taylor Whitley Beard and husband James, Madeleine Thompson, Victoria Thompson Earnest, Lauren Logan, Ashley Logan Herron, Alea Shewmake, Darby Sue Logan, and great niece and nephews, Asher Beard, Ella Beard, and Christopher Logan. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred Neale Thompson, Betty Jean 'Jaye' Thompson and Suzanne Thompson.
In times of reflection, David's life resonated with the words from the scripture: Joshua 1:9 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you where you go.'
David's story is one of a life well-lived and wellloved. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him. As we bid farewell to David Wayne Thompson Sr., we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the love he shared.
Grief is the price we pay for loving.
The family would like to thank doctors, nurses, and staff of Texas Oncology, especially Dr. Rene Castillo, for their compassionate care and guidance during Dave's illness.
