Born prematurely at 3 lbs 6 ounces, she was eventually brought home and her crib was a shoe box. Dorothy passed away when BJ was three years old. Floyd married Della May Meyers, who had a son Eddie, and the family of four moved to West Texas to the city of Kermit. Growing up in Kermit, BJ attended Kermit High School and worked as a waitress.

She married Fred William 'Dub' Hendricks on November 10, 1960, and they moved to Odessa, Texas. He was a machinist/ mechanic and she was a mother to three boys.

In 1970, BJ and her husband came to salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ through the ministry of Maranatha Baptist Church. A year later, Dub was ordained into the gospel ministry and the family moved to Jal, New Mexico, for his first of numerous pastorates throughout Texas.

In 1979, Community Baptist Church in San Marcos, Texas, called Dub as the pastor. He faithfully remained there 33 years. BJ was a dedicated pastor's wife and was devoted to her church family. She worked as a hospital volunteer and gained her 30-year service pin.

She moved to Oklahoma to live with her son and his family in 2014. Her sunny disposition and quick smile was infectious. However, she is best remembered by her favorite saying that she said to everyone: 'I love you a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck!'
