John A. Diaz

John A. Diaz, 78, of San Marcos, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

Born and raised in San Marcos, Mr. Diaz was dedicated to his family, his community and his heritage. He established himself as an important pillar of the San Marcos community, serving as a City Councilman, School Board member, board member for LULAC and the San Marcos Hispanic Cultural Center as well as holding a key to the city. John was an entrepreneur following in his grandfather’s footsteps, faithfully establishing Sign Arts in 1983, becoming a prominent business owner over its 38 years. Through his business he provided many students and citizens with job opportunities, and contributed signage and sponsorship to a multitude of community events.

John looked forward to Friday night dinners with his wife and taking her for drives to the hill country. He was extremely proud of both his daughter’s education and professional accomplishments. He was a wonderful husband, father and provider to his family.

He was very much loved and respected by his family and the San Marcos community. He will be greatly missed and his passing will truly be felt.

John was born in San Marcos, Texas on February 16, 1943 to Juan R. Diaz and Isabel Arredondo Diaz. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Elena Diaz; daughter, Cynthia Ann Diaz and partner, Robin Cypher of San Marcos; daughter, Yolanda Muzquiz and husband, Julio Muzquiz of Austin; Sister, Beatrice Diaz of Kyle; niece, Tammy Boddy, husband, Troy Boddy and their son Matthew Boddy of Kyle; niece, Lisa Truppa and husband Tony Truppa of Dallas; and one grandchild, Laura Gamboa of Austin.

Friends may call on the family from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, July 15, at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos, Texas.
