William “Bill” Ed Slaughter
An honor student, Bill attended the San Marcos public schools where he excelled in sports. He was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin where he played shortstop for the Longhorns and earned a degree in Speech Communications. Bill continued his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Bill started his career a the sports editor for th Seguin newspaper. He also served in the Army Reserve during this time. He became the Activities Director at First Baptist Church San Marcos, and then later became the church’s Educational Director. In 1985, Bill began serving as the pastor of Baptist Temple in Uvalde. After 9 years, he accepted the pastorate at First Baptist Church, La Feria.
Bill retired in 2007 and returned back to the San Marcos area where he greatly enjoyed renewing old friendships and being close to his Texas Longhorns.
Beckye Ivey and Bill Slaughter were married in 1969 and had over 51 happy years together. Their children are Brant Slaughter, Brooke & Brad Swinnea and Brennan & Cal Wallace. Grandchildren are Breanna and Rayelee Slaughter, Hayden & Wesley Swinnea, James & Jace Laubach and Grant, Lane, & Hunter Wallace.
Bill loved God, his family, his friends, baseball, books, real country music and the Texas Longhorns.
