Council votes members to boards, commissions
The San Marcos City Council made appointments to the city’s various boards and commissions during Tuesday’s regular meeting.
The council filled vacancies on the Airport Advisory Board, Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, Arts Commission, Cemetery Commission, Citizens Utility Advisory Board, Comprehensive Plan Oversight Committee, Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, Economic Development San Marcos Board, Ethics Review Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Human Services Advisory Board, Library Board, Main Street Advisory Board, Neighborhood Commission, Parks and Recreation Board, Planning and Zoning Commission, San Marcos Commission on Children and Youth, San Marcos Youth Commission, Senior Citizen Advisory Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment
“I would like to start out by saying thank you to everyone who currently serves on a board or commission and a thank you to everyone who has applied to be on a board or a commission,” Mayor Jane Hughson said. “We are fortunate that we have so many in our city that want to share their talents for the betterment of our community.”
The council began its appointments with the Planning and Zoning Commission, which is responsible for recommendations and decisions on city zoning changes, preferred scenario amendments, code amendments, plats, conditional use permits, and other development applications.
The council voted to reappoint Mark Gleason and voted to appoint Kate McCarty and Griffin Spell to P&Z.
With three spots open on the Airport Advisory Board, Gary White was the lone person appointed during Tuesday’s meeting. The council chose to keep the remaining two spots open in hopes of finding more applicants.
Five of the six open spots on the Animal Shelter Advisory Commission were filled on Tuesday. The council reappointed Dale Nave, John Trinidad, Briana Brecher, Jeff Jorgenson, and it appointed Johnathon Coco. The sixth spot will return to council and is expected to go to the city’s new animal services manager, who begins employment on Feb. 10.
Council approved Jamey Poole and Priscilla Leder for reappointment to the Arts Commission and appointed Kelly King-Green.
Robert Cotner, Shannon Fitzpatrick and Alison Tudor were reappointed to the Cemetery Commission, while Laura Kennedy and Virginia Eben were appointed during Tuesday’s meeting.
The council voted to reappoint Heather Baca to the Citizen Utility Advisory Board and appointed Paul Jensen and Ray Palermo.
Jim Garber, Betsy Robertson, Tom Wassenich, Jim Pendergast, Paul Murray, Joe Cox and Roland Saucedo were voted to the Comprehensive Plan Oversight Committee.
Council filled seven of the open eight slots on the Convention & Visitor Bureau Board. Cody Taylor, Phillip Fusco III, Josie Falletta, Rosina Valle, Jamie Lee Case, Bert Lumbreras and Joca Marquez were appointed to the board. The eighth spot will be filled at a later date.
The council filled four openings on the Economic Development San Marcos Board. Lumbreras filled the spot for city manager’s office representative; Jason Giulietti, vice president for the Greater San Marcos Partnership, took the spot vacant for the GSMP president; Lizbeth Dobbins was appointed as a citizen at large; and Eric Terwort filled a spot for a small business representative.
Johnathan Lollar was reappointed to the Ethics Review Commission, while L.A. “Annie” Teehan was also appointed.
The council reappointed Nina Ramos to the Housing Authority Board and voted to appoint Rachel Hannah Durrance and Mittie Miller.
Mary Peterson Earls was reappointed to the Human Services Advisory Board. Council filled the remaining three spots with Gloria Quinn, Daniel Steele and Monica Elise Gonzales.
Kathryn Brady and Lauren Mikiten were reappointed to the Library Board to the normal three-year term. Council voted to reappoint Joanne Engle and Joan Nagle, who were not eligible to be reappointed, to the Library Board for a two-year term in order to see the completion of the library renovation.
The council voted to appoint Anita Collins to the Main Street Advisory Board to a spot held by Hays County, while Shandee Lynn and Rose Brooks filled the two remaining vacancies.
The Neighborhood Commission had six spots open. The council reappointed Saucedo to Sector 5 neighborhood representative and Lupe Costilla to Sector 6. Joe Cantu, who previously served as Sector 2 representative, was reappointed to the commission as the Sector 9 representative. Johnny Garcia was appointed as Sector 4 representative and William DeSoto was picked to represent Sector 2.
Ryan McGillicuddy and Diane Phalen were reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Peter Vogt and Cherif Gacis filled the final two vacancies.
Michelle Harper was voted as the United Way representative on the San Marcos Commission on Children & Youth. Council also appointed Marsha Moore, Shirley Ogletree and Daniel Steel to the commission. Vacancies remain for a Hays County representative and Austin Community College representative.
The council appointed Sara Carlson, Mary Hodges, Diane Eure, Alan Atchison and David Ross to the Senior Citizen Advisory Board.
The San Marcos Youth Commission had 15 openings to fill and only had eight applicants. All eight were appointed to the commission: Daniel Abujar, Catarina Vazquez, Kayla Livingston, Jada Cartwright, Avery Jones, Zachary Adam Keel, Aaron Emerich and Jasmine Thomas.
Nicholas Costilla and Wayman Jones were reappointed to the Zoning Board of Adjustments, while Chana Temple claimed the final vacancy.
The council chose to postpone appointments to the Historic Preservation Committee. Appointments to the Construction Board of Appeals will be brought back at a later meeting.
