SMUUF donates $800 to Mano Amiga

On Sunday, November 24, the San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) took up a Donte-the-Plate collection during their Sunday morning Worship Service for Mano Amiga in the generous amount of $800.  Jeannie Lewis, SMUUF Social Justice Chair, said, “SMUUF has a close association with Mano Amiga — two of our SMUUF members are co-founders, Jordan Buckley and Karen Munoz.  And some of our members, such as Karen Brown, serve on their Board and actively participate in their social justice activities.”

Eric Martinez, Policy Director for Mano Amiga, says, “It is the mission, duty and purpose of Mano Amiga San Marcos to educate, advocate, coordinate, and organize alongside and in favor of immigrants and low-income residents in the rural I-35 corridor between San Antonio and Austin: Guadalupe, Caldwell, Hays, and Comal counties. With our partners in the big cities.  We aim to construct an 80- mile-long zone of resistance to racist, anti-immigrant policies as well as advocacy for criminal justice reforms, deep in the heart of Texas. “

Donated funds from SMUUF would be put toward Mano Amiga’s local criminal justice reform efforts, including the push to end low-level, non-violent arrests via a Cite and Release Ordinance in San Marcos, as well as their countywide push in Spring 2020 to motivate Hays County to embrace a Public Defenders Office proposal. Mano Amiga’s staff will also be presenting know your rights materials in schools and parishes across Hays County, while engaging in coordinated U.S. Census promotion.
