San Marcos CISD continues monitoring virus developments

Sunday, March 15, 2020

San Marcos Consolidated ISD continues to monitor and coordinate with regional government agencies amid growing concerns of COVID-19, district Superintendent Michael Cardona said in a letter to parents on Friday.

The district continues to monitor cases throughout the region following positive cases of coronavirus in Austin-Travis County on Friday and the first presumptive positive case in Hays County on Saturday. There continues to be no confirmed cases in the school district.

“The (City of San Marcos’) emergency management efforts remain vigilant and San Marcos CISD will continue to follow the recommendations of the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Hays County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” Cardona said in his letter.

The presumptive confirmed cases in Austin-Travis County are not the result of community spread and neither individuals infected are county residents. One individual is from Houston and has been visiting friends in Austin and another is a patient transferred to a hospital in Austin from another Texas hospital, Cardona said. Hays County’s presumptive first case is also related to travel.

SMCISD had canceled extracurricular events for Thursday and Friday, excluding University Interscholastic League athletic events.

The UIL announced Friday that it is suspending all contests due to COVID-19, effective Monday, March 16 through March 29.

“We are urging our member schools and their communities to stay vigilant and take every possible precaution to remain safe and healthy,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said. “We understand there is a lot of uncertainty during this unprecedented time. Please know UIL leadership is working diligently to adjust to this rapidly evolving situation and will share updates as soon as possible.”

SMCISD begins its spring break on Monday through March 20. The district said it will notify parents with an update on March 19.
