Local Faith Communities Host Interfaith Pride Celebration in September
Sept. is Pride month in San Marcos, and several faith leaders in the area are hosting the 2nd Annual Interfaith Pride Celebration in San Marcos on Thursday, September 12, at 7 p.m. in the United Campus Ministry at 510 North Guadalupe Street in San Marcos. The community is invited to attend.
Rev. Jaime Bouzard, with Christ Chapel at Texas State, is organizing several area faith leaders in hosting an inclusive celebration.
“Sept. is Pride month in this area, instead of June like is common elsewhere, because we wanted to give our university students the opportunity to participate in Pride events when the university was fully in session,” Bouzard said.
Bouzard continued, “We hosted this Interfaith Pride Celebration last year in September for the first time, and it was so well-received and successful that we decided to make it an annual Sept. event during Pride month. … We wanted to give the LGBTQIA+ community, students and adults, the message that there were faith-based services in our community where they could attend and feel welcome and safe.”
The faith-based organizations participating are (in alphabetical order): Christ Chapel, Disciples of Christ, Indigenous Cultures Institute, Living Word Lutheran Church, San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, United Campus Ministry, and 2.42 Church, with involvement from SMTX Pride.
A potluck buffet and meet and greet will be provided by the faith organizations following the program as well as an opportunity to participate in a Chappell Roan singalong.
There is some limited free parking, including handicapped spaces, in the small parking lot in front of the UCM at the top of Guadalupe Street by the university. Additionally, overflow parking is available directly across the street from the entrance to First United Methodist Church on the 100 block of West Hutchinson Street.
