Celebrating Women

For the third consecutive year, art by women is the focus of a new gallery show held in conjunction with International Women’s Day, which takes place on March 8. “From Challenge Comes Change” features 81 individual works by more than 50 area women displayed throughout the first-floor galleries of the Price Center now through March 27. The show is free and open to the public daily. A virtual celebration planned for March 8 is also in production.

“Once again we find ourselves amazed by the quality and talent displayed in this show,” said Debangana Banerjee, who created the event at the San Marcos Public Library in 2019. “Each of these beautiful works becomes even more so in conjunction with all the other works on display,” she added.

As in year’s past, the show offers a striking, thought-provoking, and engagingly diverse mix of subjects and media. Most of the artwork is available to purchase and a portion of any proceeds benefits the non-profit Price Center’s ongoing arts efforts.

A special Tribute to Women is a separate 18-piece community art installation within the show featuring individual works honoring a woman who inspired the artists who created the tribute.

Due to COVID, this year’s March 8th International Women’s Day celebration will be held virtually via a prerecorded program that will be posted on YouTube and the Price Center’s website and Facebook pages. The line up for this years program includes favorite inspirational quotes by women shared by the show’s planning committee members, poetry readings, and musical and dance performances by area women.

Community Art Shows are conducted by the Price Center Art’s Committee and funded in part through a grant from the San Marcos Arts Commission. New calls for art are issued every couple of months.
