Gary Job Corps Corrections cadets assisted with traffic and crowd control during the recent Texas State University football game against Troy University. This was the Bobcats Homecoming game. Corrections/ Security cadets assist at many local and Central Texas events. The cadets have assisted with F1, COTA, “Jamaica’s” in Martindale, Lockhart, Uhland, San Marcos, 4th of July Parade Martindale, Sights and Sounds of Christmas, San Marcos Academy OctoBEARFEST, Texas State Football and Graduation Ceremonies naming a few of the many activities. Above, are Gary Job Corps Corrections cadets: Zackary Kirkwood, Jaman Dixon, Julian Hare, Turner Welch, Abraham Carrasquillo, Antonio Garcia, Jaylen Wright, Ny’Shay Taylor, Nichole Vasquez and Donyea Childress, under the instruction of Capt. Jesus Gonzalez. The city of San Marcos has started to accept donations in support of its 2nd Annual Winter Heater Drive which began Wednesday. The city is asking that anyone who is interested in helping their neighbors in need–who do not have or cannot afford heating–reach out to purchase heaters through either the SMTX Utilities Amazon wish list or by making monetary donations through the online payment service, Stripes, using the address, sanmarcostx.gov/3994/About-Us. Heaters will also be accepted through Nov. 30, city officials stated. San Marcos residents interested in receiving a free heater, are encouraged to reach out to The Salvation Army San Marcos at (512) 754-8541 to get placed on the organization's waitlist. The Texas Cultural Trust, a nonprofit increasing awareness, access, and support for the arts, arts education, artists, and the arts and culture industry in Texas, has announced that their Texas Women for the Arts grant application is open. Awarding between $250,000 and $450,000 annually, Texas Women for the Arts provides essential funding to support arts education initiatives and increase access to the arts for children in Texas.

Implications of local San Marcos fish species loss

A highly specialized fish, home to only San Marcos, was recently removed from the Endangered Species List and classified as extinct. The protections on the San Marcos River, springs as well as Spring Lake, will not be removed due to the loss of the local Gambusia. According to the Meadows Center for the Water and Environment website, the Upper San Marcos River is one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the southwestern U.S. that still contains seven endangered species.
