Hugh Goldsby Black, Jr.
Hugh Goldsby Black, Jr., 100 years old, longtime San Marcos resident, died peacefully in his home on October 7th, 2020. Hugh, born on September 20, 1920, grew up in Memphis, TN, with his parents, Hugh Goldsby Black, Sr., and Ola Mable Blancet Black, and his sister, Olive "Babe" Black (King). After graduating from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) with a BA in Music, he joined the U.S. Army. He fought in WWII, landing at Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion. After the war, he lived in Mexico, learning Spanish, which he taught later in Texas. He attended UT at Austin, earning his Master's Degree in Library Science. He joined Southwest Texas State's library, advancing to Head of Public Services, in charge of both Circulation and Reference Departments. In retirement, he was a dedicated volunteer tutor for ESL students at the San Marcos Public Library for more than 20 years.
