In the first week of March, the Twice Blessed Consignment Shop celebrated its 20-year anniversary serving the San Marcos community. To date, the shop has raised nearly $1 million dollars since opening its doors on Feb. 20, 2001, giving the volunteer-based staff ample reason to celebrate.

On more than one occasion, I have been guilty of warning gardeners the perils of being out phloxed by their neighbors. If this happens your neighbors will certainly have the MOST dazzling landscape in the neighborhood. Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413 Auxiliary member Laura Davis worked with Post Commander Stephanie Brown, Post Members, Veterans Service Officers Jude Prather and Michael Hernandez, and the Hays County Food Bank to provide a mobile food distribution for veterans and their families. Twenty registered participants were planned for. The food was picked up at the food bank and donated by members of the VFW and placed into proper packaging. The city of San Marcos and many local organizations donated three pallets of water and several cases of flavored water that the San Marcos Fire Department delivered to the post for distribution.

The Rotary Club of Wimberley welcomes a new member, Ermias Ketema Gebremeskel. Gebremeskel is from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and holds degrees in Biology, Business Administration and Tour Operations. His company, Stunning Ethiopia Tours, can be found on Tripadvisor. He is proud to now call Wimberley home. Gebremeskel met his future wife, Carrie Campbell, during a literacy mission trip in Ethiopia coordinated between the Rotary Club of Wimberley and the Davis Moon Project (DMP). DMP is a nongovernmental organization working in Ethiopia to increase literacy and was founded by a former Wimberley Rotarian, Sonja Simmons. Gebremeskel has also recently joined Sonja on the DMP Board of Directors to help improve conditions in his country of origin.

My journey this week takes me to a message preached at First Baptist Church, McCarty Lane, on Jan. 31, 2021. Pastor Lonny Poe, adjunct professor with our pastor, Chad Chaddick, at Logston Seminary, had been asked to supply preach. I have permission from Poe to use his notes for this column.

Collective nouns are common in English, think of such assemblages as a flock of sheep, a den of thieves or a herd of cattle.

Certain foods are synonymous with particular holidays or times of year. For example, few people can imagine celebrating Valentine’s Day without ample supplies of chocolate on hand. And what summer barbecue is complete without grilled hot dogs and hamburgers? While these foods and others are must-haves during certain times of the year, that doesn’t mean they cannot be enjoyed whenever a craving arises.
