San Marcos found themselves back on the gridiron once more as the Rattlers prepare for the 2023 football season.

The road to Oklahoma City starts this week for the Bobcats as Texas State enters the Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament.

Texas State softball had two players named to the 2023 All-Sun Belt Conference Team. Pitcher Jessica Mullins was named to the First Team and third baseman Sara Vanderford was named to the Second Team.

THURSDAY

An 8th inning rally was just enough as Texas State put away Georgia State 7-5 to complete the three game sweep over the Panthers.

Enduring an hour-long lightning episode, playing in two different stadiums and having a benches clearing moment, San Marcos outscored Churchill in the final two innings to claim their first Bi-District Championship since 2018, defeating the Chargers 5-2.

After winning Game 1 8-2, San Marcos couldn’t seal the deal at home as the Rattlers fell to San Antonio Churchill 6-1 as the Chargers forced a decisive Game 3 in front of a packed house.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration is this week. This particular celebrations stands out for me as it was the first road race in my time here that was held in San Marcos. The Capital 10K in 1979 had 2,000 runners and I went down to see Warren Leddick, the Parks and Recreation Director, to see if we could put on a race here in San Marcos. Warren was also a track and field director so he knew how to put a race on. The 10K race was held out at the Civic Center and ran out on the access road and Redwood Road (Wonder World now) and came back in off Highway 123. We had about 125 runners show up for the race. I ran in the race and helped out before and after the main race took place. I can’t remember if the race went on the next few years after that as Leddick moved to Longview for a position there.

Texas State won the final home series of the year as the Bobcats defeated the James Madison Dukes 2-0 on Thursday before an 8-2 win on Friday.

My lifestyle has greatly changed in the last five weeks. I had spinal surgery on the last day of March. Lots of pain. Recovery is slow. No fishing, no turkey hunting, no bike riding, no long hikes. No nothing! Just a prisoner IN my house, simply chained to my chair. My wife Beth has been a great nurse helping me. But she is the Gestapo when it comes to me doing too much too soon!

On a team heavy with upperclassmen, two Texas State freshmen have been able to make a big splash for the Bobcats over the course of the season.
