CJ Odam, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD) Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE) will speak with members of the San Marcos Rotary Club during the weekly meeting on January 10, 2024, at Texas Roadhouse.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy is now accepting applications for the 2024 Spring basic class. The course will tentatively start on February 15.

The monthly First Tuesday SMTX Film Series returns with the award-winning documentary The Grove, Texas on January 9th at The Price Center & Garden. The film focuses on the life of Moody Anderson and the town he owned by the same name, situated 85 miles north of Austin and 16 miles southeast of Gatesville in Coryell County.

The Gary Job Corps Center hosted the Community Relations Council to show appreciation for a Wonderful 2023 and discuss the plans for a successful 2024. The students and staff have assisted with many community projects, and part of the meeting was the planning of the upcoming year. The Gary staff and students have been active over the years in building projects and volunteer events in the following Central Texas cities: Dripping Springs, Wimberley, Driftwood, Austin, Georgetown, Lockhart, Maxwell, Martindale, Luling, Prairie Lea, Redwood, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Bastrop, Buda, Kyle and San Marcos.

Deputies with the Hays County Sheriff shot and killed a man wielding two knives on Friday morning, according to the Hays County Sheriff’s Department.

Thousands of residents in Hays County received an unexpected letter over the last week as the Constable offices across Hays County had to hand deliver jury summonses. The unique circumstance came up because of an “error by a Hays County vendor that has affected more than 6,000 jury notices throughout multiple county offices,” according to Hays County District Clerk Avrey Anderson Sr.

The National Weather Service website stated that as of Jan. 4, 24% of the Hill Country is in what is considered extreme drought conditions, which is the second to the worst drought designation category. Additionally, 20% of the Hill Country is in severe drought, which is a level below extreme. Aquifer levels reached the lowest point since the 1950s. Issues around groundwater usage and the limitations thereof have gotten contentious.
