Current city of San Marcos Planning and Zoning Commission member Griffin Spell has thrown his hat into the upcoming city council election ring.

A San Marcos resident recently traveled to Austin to claim a Powerball prize worth $1 million for the drawing on July 19.

Water levels dropping in San Marcos

As outdoor workers in Texas battle extreme heat, U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, launched a daylong “thirst strike” in Washington, D.C., as he pushes for a federal workplace standard that would mandate water breaks for people whose jobs require them to work in the heat.

Texas has thus far endured a heat wave of historic proportions in the summer of 2023. The higher-than-normal temperatures have created health issues for many residents and impacted quality of life for millions of people. Not surprisingly, the effects do not stop there.

Local residents along with many members of law enforcement from surroundings cities celebrated with the city of Kyle at the ribbon cutting and opening of the new Public Safety Building. The Public Safety Building will house the Kyle Police along with some city offices. Kyle Chief of Police Jeff Barnett thanked the audience for their attendance and offered tours of the complex. Caldwell County is working to establish a new emergency services district for its residents.

The city of San Marcos Planning and Zoning Commission met at 6 p.m. Tuesday, at the City Council Chambers.

The Hays County Commissioners Court received an update on pretrial services from the Hays County Pretrial Services Director Randy Foken at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday. The update came in response to a public comment involving the backlog of cases and pretrial detainees struggling to contact their attorneys in the Hays County Jail. The public comment was made on the agenda item requesting case management software for pretrial services.

The Hays County Historical Commission received a 2022 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission.
