An Austin woman was arrested on charges of trafficking persons after the Hays County Sheriff’s Office learned of possible illicit activity at the Riverbend Spa in San Marcos.
HCSO said it launched an investigation after receiving a complaint about the spa, located at 1904 Old Ranch Road 12. Officials said deputies learned through the course of its investigation that several workers were living in the spa performing sexual acts for money.
A multi-agency effort conducted by the sheriff’s office, Texas Department of Licensing and Registration Anti-Trafficking Unit and refugee advocates from Austin executed a search warrant at the Riverbend Spa. HCSO stated that trafficked persons were found at the spa and paired with the refugee advocates for assistance.
Officials stated that a subsequent arrest warrant was issued for the trafficker — Selina Sun, 41 — and a search warrant was issued for her residence in Austin.
The sheriff’s office executed the search and arrest warrants at Sun’s residence at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Thursday and she was taken into custody. Sun is currently in the Hays County Jail on charges of Trafficking of Persons — a second-degree felony. HCSO said a bond has not been set at this time.
The sheriff’s office worked with a multitude of agencies including the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration.
Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler said he is “extremely proud of the deputies, detectives, and special units within the sheriff’s office for their outstanding work.” He also stated his gratitude for the cooperation between Hays County citizens, his office and the assisting agencies for the work on the case.
