Sidewalks for Belvin Street welcomed as a good idea

Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the letter published in the Record on February 3 protesting the sidewalk to be built on Belvin Street. As residents of Belvin

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the letter published in the Record on February 3 protesting the sidewalk to be built on Belvin Street. As residents of Belvin Street’s historic neighborhood, and as parents of three school-age children, my husband and I greatly appreciate the city’s efforts to improve our street.

In undertaking this work, we trust that the city will be appropriately sensitive to the historic aspects of our properties and will carefully recover indigenous artifacts, as well as protect our Live Oaks and other natural and horticultural features. In addition to supporting the flood control measures to be implemented in the city’s overall plan, we are *strongly in favor* of installing sidewalks on Belvin Street.

We and many of our neighbors feel that sidewalks will be extremely beneficial to the neighborhood by connecting downtown with the greenbelt, slowing down vehicle traffic on our residential streets, and, in general, providing for safer pedestrian traffic. We are convinced that reconstructing Belvin Street — with new sidewalks — will create a significant public good and we are more than willing to give up a portion of our front yard to this effort.

Sincerely,

Anne Halsey
