In addition to modifying the football and volleyball activity calendars on Tuesday, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) also made changes to the calendars for both girl’s and boys’ basketball.
The dates for the start of practice, scrimmages and interschool games will all remain the same for both sides. The Lady Rattlers can begin practice on Oct. 21, compete in scrimmages Oct. 31 and begin the regular season Nov. 6. The San Marcos boys can begin practice on Oct. 28, compete in scrimmages Nov. 7 and begin the regular season Nov. 13.
However, the UIL ruled that teams can play a maximum of two preseason games and 27 regular season games. Schools will not be allowed to host or play in tournaments and can only compete in preseason events that involve a maximum of four teams. A large chunk of both San Marcos teams’ schedules were made up of tournament games during the 2019-20 season, including the Champions Classic, which the Lady Rattlers host every year inside the Snake Pit.
The shortened season means the district certification date will be moved up to Feb. 9 for girls and Feb. 16 for boys and the state championships will take place March 4-6 for girls and March 11-13 for boys.
