Suspects identified in Wednesday’s shooting incident

The San Marcos Police Department identified three suspects in a shooting incident that occurred at Sadler House Apartments on Wednesday, following a thorough, multi-county investigation.

Warrants for aggravated robbery were issued for Mauricio Jose Berrios, 24, and Airton Mosquera, 20. A third suspect was identified but their name is not being released at this time, officials said.

SMPD responded to multiple reports of shots fired at Sadler House Apartments, 1271 Sadler Drive,  at approximately 5:12 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials said initial reports included the possibility of an active shooter, however, an investigation revealed this was not a random event.

Following a multi-agency response, which included SMPD, the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Ranger Division, Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Hays County Constables, Kyle Police Department and Texas State University Police Department, two male victims and several witnesses were located, officials said.

Police say the two victims reported being attacked by multiple armed assailants in an attempted robbery at the victims’s apartment. One of the victims used a handgun during the robbery to shoot at the assailants, striking one of them in the leg, officials said.

As the assailants were fleeing from the gunfire, the assailant who was shot reportedly fell down off a building stairwell and broke his leg when he landed, police said. The injured assailant was then helped into a white 2016 Lexus by an accomplice.

Police say two assailants fled the scene in the Lexus passenger car and a third assailant fled in a newer black Jeep SUV.

Officials stated that witnesses at the scene provided the Lexus’s license plate number to SMPD, which sent out notices to law enforcement in surrounding areas, including Houston as the passenger car was registered in Houston.

Following an extensive investigation of the expansive crime scene, a large quantity of drugs, money and guns were collected from the scene after searching through the exterior crime scene and a search of the victim’s apartment, which was completed with a search warrant, SMPD said.

Officials say SMPD was notified by the Texas DPS Houston Violent Crime Squad around 8 p.m. Wednesday night that two males were admitted to Houston Methodist West Hospital in Katy who matched the description of the assailants in the robbery in San Marcos. The two males had gunshot wounds and one had a broken leg. Officials said the males were driving the white Lexus identified in the incident and one of them was the registered owner of the vehicle.

Berrios and Mosquera were identified as the two suspects. Officials said the Texas Rangers, Texas Rangers, Texas DPS Houston Violent Crime Squad, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Houston Police Department and the Katy Police Department responded to the hospital to serve the suspects warrants for aggravated robbery.

Officials say Mosquera was released after receiving treatment and was apprehended on the warrant by the Katy Police Department. He was temporarily held in KPD’s detention facilities until SMPD officers arrived to transport him back to Hays County, police said.

Mosquera is currently awaiting magistration at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center. Officials said Berrios required more extensive treatment for his injuries and was medically transferred to Ben Taub Hospital in Houston.

SMPD said a third assailant was identified through its investigation. The identity of the third suspect is not being released at this time. Officials said active efforts are underway to apprehend the third suspect.

The investigation into Wednesday’s incident is ongoing.
