Rattlers fall to Unicorns, look to build off second-half effort

San Marcos fell to New Braunfels, 4-1, on Friday night inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium.

The Rattlers gave up three goals in the opening half, but they put together a stronger second half, where each team scored a goal.

“I thought we played a very good second half,” head coach Lisa Mazur said. “I think if we played both halves like we played the second half, I think it would be good for us. We’d have a better game. I thought they worked really hard in the second half.”

New Braunfels (10-1-1, 4-0-1 26-6A) put the pressure on San Marcos (5-7-1, 3-2-0) early in Friday’s contest.

The Unicorns got on the board first and then quickly scored two more goals to go on top, 3-0.

New Braunfels added its fourth goal of the night in the second half. The Rattlers got on the board late in the match.

Despite the loss, Mazur said San Marcos can build off the second-half effort going forward.

“Just the effort in the second half was tremendous,” Mazur said. “And when we keep that effort up, I think we’ll be in business. These are good teams but I think we’ll have a chance to stick in there and have a chance.”

After the Rattlers first five district games, San Marcos is in a three-way tie for third place with Smithson Valley and Schertz Clemens. The Rattlers face Smithson Valley on the road on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

“I think we keep our heads up,” Mazur said. “We’re still a good position and we just keep working on the things we need to work on and push forward.”
