San Marcos fell to Schertz Clemens, 5-0, on Tuesday.
The Lady Rattlers allowed a late first-half goal. The Lady Buffaloes used a four-goal second half to secure the match.
“The first goal in the second half, we just had a mental breakdown,” head coach Jason Carnley said. “Then we just kind of lost our composure. We were unable to put the pieces back together. I mean, Clemens is a great team. We fought them hard in the first half. I think that first goal might have been offsides, it’s hard to tell. I think it was. Once that went in, you could see everybody just kind of dropped for a second.”
Clemens’ Mya Sheridan, Kelsey Ayers, Morgan Bishop, Simone Sheridan and Bella Salazar scored goals for the Lady Buffaloes.
San Marcos played a physical game against Clemens. Carnley said that was something the Lady Rattlers needed.
“We needed that physical, tough kind of mentality,” Carnley said. “We don’t have a lot of club kids in our program, so we have to learn how to fight all the way through it when we go against these teams that have all these club kids. It’s a different kind of mentality, a different kind of mindset. But we just got to keep fighting and keeping pushing through it.”
San Marcos has played through four district games this season. Carnley said the team has learned that it can’t stop battling throughout matches.
“The thing about these games is once we get on a groove, we’ve got to expect the unexpected,” Carnley said. “That’s something that we have to figure out. Hopefully, we will as we go on.”
The Lady Rattlers look to break a two-match losing streak when they travel to New Braunfels to play the Unicorns on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
“(Clemens) moved the ball on us pretty good but the score didn’t show how good we actually played,” Carnley said. “It’s hard to really prove that to people to see how well we’re actually doing. It’s tough. Ten goals in the last two games is tough. But we’re getting better and better each week. The score may not show it but we really are.”
