UIL extends suspension of activities through at least May 4

The UIL announced an update to its suspension of all interscholastic activities on Thursday, extending the shutdown to at least May 4.

The league originally canceled all sanctioned contests March 16-29 and later expanded it to include all practices, rehearsals and workouts. Now, the return date has been postponed by more than month.

“We are working diligently on contingency plans to conduct state championships in each of the activities that have been suspended,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said in a statement. “While the immediate future is unclear, we are committed to providing these much-desired activities to all Texas students and will prepare for all possible outcomes, including extended school closures.”

The UIL did say it would remain flexible in all decisions and would be consistent with the advice of local, state and federal officials. It also stated that its member schools would go through a reasonable acclimatization period before any competition resumes.
