McCoy's Headquarters makes changes at the top

McCoy's Headquarters makes changes at the top

Brian McCoy, chairman and CEO of McCoy’s Building Supply, recently announced the promotion of Meagan McCoy Jones to president and chief operating officer. Brian McCoy, the third generation of the McCoy family to lead the company, has acted as chairman, president and CEO since 2001.

Jones, McCoy’s daughter, has most recently served as executive vice president and COO.

“Meagan continues to take on more of the leadership and strategic planning of McCoy’s Building Supply, and her promotion to president is a natural next step in our planning for both the family and the company,” McCoy said in an internal announcement to the company. “I look forward to our years ahead of leading McCoy’s together, with Meagan as our president and me in my role as chairman and CEO.”

Additionally, McCoy’s Board of Directors voted to promote Reid McCoy, Brian McCoy’s son and current board member, to vice chair. The board also named Dennis Strong and John Meeks, former senior vice presidents of the company, as new members of its board.

“I am so grateful Dennis and John will continue to serve our company,” Jones said. “This allows them to mentor our senior leaders, set policy and maintain oversight of the company in their roles on the board.”

“Our company is on a path of orderly transition, which few businesses take as seriously as we have,” Reid McCoy said

McCoy’s Building Supply also announced that its longest tenured employee, former CFO and current board of directors member Chuck Churchwell retired on Jan. 1, after 48 years with the company.

Churchwell, a native of Luling, Texas, and graduate of Southwest Texas State University – now Texas State University – started his career with McCoy’s working at stores in Austin and Brazoria. Churchwell soon transferred to headquarters where he held several positions in his early years ranging from buyer to personnel manager before taking on major roles in accounting.

McCoy’s Building Supply grew, reaching $100 million in sales in 1981 and Churchwell grew with it every step of the way – moving from accountant to controller in the mid-80s before becoming chief financial officer (CFO) in the early 90s. Churchwell became vice president and CFO in 1993 making him the first non-McCoy family named vice president. Impressive growth continued at McCoy’s throughout the 90s, including the company reaching a milestone half a billion dollars in sales in 1999.

“McCoy’s Building Supply simply wouldn’t be where we are today without Chuck. He is one of the most trustworthy, enduring and hardworking leaders our company has ever known. Chuck was always there to support our executive team and me with his willing spirit and intense resolve,” said Brian McCoy, CEO. “His embrace of our Business As UnUsual (BAU) training strongly influenced our company culture at a time when we desperately needed to learn how to serve our customers, teams and one another.”

Chuck Churchwell, former McCoy's CFO and current board director, retired after 48 years on Jan. 1.

In 2001, Churchwell was promoted to executive vice president and joined the board of directors working closely with McCoy who became CEO and president of McCoy’s Building Supply that same year. After 10 years of working extensively with BAU trainings, Churchwell stepped down from his executive vice president role in 2013 to focus more on his board of directors position.

“Retiring from the company is definitely an emotional time in my life. I have nothing but positive thoughts about the future of McCoy’s,” Churchwell said. “I’m excited about Meagan McCoy Jones’ role as president and COO and with Reid McCoy becoming vice chair of the board of directors, McCoy’s future is brighter than ever.”
