The San Marcos High School wrestling team traveled to Vista Ridge on Dec. 21 to compete in the Hill Country Invitational. The boys finished ninth out of 21 teams despite being shorthanded. Christian Garcia went undefeated in four matches to win his first tourney championship of the season. Mason Moreno and Matt Banda both lost tough matches in the championship to place second. Christopher Soliz II went 4-1 to place third. Zachery Tolley (fourth) and Julian Moreno (fifth) also placed to add to the Rattlers’ point total. Dane Calvino gave it his best shot but was unable to finish the tourney and had to withdraw after battling through a nagging injury during the week.
Gianna Moreno (4-0) and Caitlin Hagerty’s (5-0) undefeated tourney runs paced the girl’s team, both winning their championship matches to help the team to a third-place finish. Following closely behind were freshmen Lady Rattlers Jesyka Banda (second place) and Kaylynn Martin (second place). Also scoring for the girls’ team was Alexa Hernandez, managing two wins on the day.
