USPS to relocate retail services from SM’s Post Office

Retail services will be moving from the San Marcos Post Office.

The United States Postal Service announced last week that, based partially on input during a public meeting last November, retail services including post office boxes will be moved from 210 S. Stagecoach Trail to a new, as yet to be determined location.

The relocation will be to “a new space that suits the current requirements for the community and anticipates providing  the same services at the new location as were provided to customers at the existing Post Office,” USPS said in a news release.

“The Postal Service’s goal is to select a new customer service location as close to the current site as possible,” adding that “consideration will be given to all sites that are convenient to customers and that will meet all USPS operational needs.”

Until a replacement site is found, retail services will continue at the present location. The agency said an “estimated move date” is Jan. 6, 2020.

“While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the San Marcos community, the USPS properly considered community input and this decision is consistent with Postal Services objectives.”

The news release also  noted that “Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.”

The San Marcos Post Office on S. Stagecoach opened in January 2013 after moving from a location downtown on Guadalupe Street, where it had been operating for decades.
