Bobcats rack up end-of-season Sun Belt accolades

Texas State led the Sun Belt this season with four players named to the all-conference teams, the league announced on Tuesday.

Sophomore Emily DeWalt repeated as Sun Belt Setter of the Year and was selected to the all-league First Team. DeWalt earned three Setter of the Week accolades throughout the season on Oct. 21, Oct. 28 and Nov. 11. The Helotes native finished third in the conference with 10.25 assists per set and was also second on the team with 35 aces.

Senior outside hitter Cheyenne Huskey joined DeWalt on the First Team. Huskey led the Bobcats in kills (386), aces (50), and points (467.5). The senior was also named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30.

Junior middle blocker Tyeranee Scott and sophomore outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald were both named to the all-conference Second Team. Scott posted a team-best .332 hitting percentage and 98 blocks this year and was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23. Fitzgerald was second to Huskey with 246 kills and Scott with a .284 hitting percentage.

Head coach Karen Chisum her seventh Coach of the Year Trophy, leading Texas State to a 22-8 overall record and going 14-2 in league play. It’s the first time in her 40-year career that she’s won the accolade in consecutive seasons.

The Bobcats will be the No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt tournament this weekend, receiving a two-round bye. They’ll take on the winner of No. 4 Troy versus No. 5 Louisiana or No. 8 Arkansas State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. All games will be played at Strahan Arena and broadcasted on ESPN+.
