Board vows to add early voting sites

The San Marcos CISD board of trustees set the date and early voting locations for an election for the District 4 and District 5 seats on the board.

At their meeting Tuesday night, the trustees ordered an election for May 4 for the two positions, which are currently held by Kathy Hansen and Clementine Cantu. Election Day voting will be at Crockett Elementary for District 4 and Travis Elementary for District 5. A modification to the initial election order will give voters three early voting locations locations to choose from.

Initially, the Hays County Government Center was named as the only early voting location for the election, but Trustee Anne Halsey said that she would like to have an early voting location on the Texas State University campus.

“I think we have a lot of parents, in the first place, who work up there,” she said.

Trustee Miguel Arredondo concurred.

“I think more polling places is better than less,” he said.

Trustee John McGlothlin questioned whether putting an early voting location at Texas State would be giving preferential treatment to one area, when there are other major employers in the city that would not get an early voting location. Halsey then said she would be open to additional polling places.

“I would like to take a voting machine around to every registered voter and have them vote at their door,” she said.

In keeping with previous elections, the board decided to have a polling location at the Hays County Government Center for the duration of early voting and locations set up at the Live Oak Community Clinic and the Texas State University campus for the typical number of days during early voting.

Although early voting will be available at several locations, only residents of Districts 4 and 5 will be able to vote. Information on filing for candidacy and a map of the SMCISD single-member districts can be found at SMCISD's website
