San Marcos Academy (2-1) fell to Central Texas Christian (2-1) in Temple on Friday, 13-7.
The Bears were outgained 376 total yards to 80, but came up with three takeaways and clutch stops to stay in the game. Junior Alex Davis intercepted a pass and junior and freshman defensive backs Gino Dipollino and Cole Krackau, respectively, each came up with a fumble recovery during the contest. Krackau returned his scoop for a 41-yard touchdown in the first quarter, getting SMA on the board. The team also halted two Lions drives on fourth down twice, both times in Bears territory. Freshman Wilson Guenther nearly came up with a game-winning strip-and-score in the fourth quarter, but the play was ruled dead on forward progress.
The game showed progress for SMA, who lost to Central Texas Christian 48-6 last season on Sept. 14, 2018. The Bears will play at San Antonio Brooks Academy of Science and Engineering on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
