Texas State commit Trace Martin will head to Toledo, Ohio this week to play in the 72nd US Junior Amateur tournament.
The San Marcos native and recent Grace Preparatory Academy of New Braunfels graduate qualified for his spot by finishing in second place at a sectional qualifier held at the Cimarron Hills Golf and Country Club in Georgetown that took place on June 17. The qualifier tournament was one of 56 held throughout the country and hosted 45 of the 3,496 nationwide competitors. Only 156 golfers qualified for the national tournament.
The event will be held at Iverness Club in Toledo. The tourney begins with two rounds of 18 holes before cutting the field down to 64 competitors for a 36-hole championship match. The winner earns an exemption into the 2020 US Open.
Martin has three tournament titles under his belt, including two in 2018: the Prestige Tour Mid-Summer Showcase and New Braunfels Showcase. He made his commitment to the maroon and gold official in 2017 and will join the Bobcats this fall.
The 72nd US Junior Amateur tournament takes place from July 15-20. Martin began Monday on the 10th hole at 12:58 p.m., paired with Jay Nimmo from Benton, Kentucky and Canadian William Duquette of Laval, Quebec. The tournament will air on Friday and Saturday on Fox Sports 1.
