Dear Editor,
As more details emerge concerning the brutality and lethality of the migrant concentration camps scattered across the country, I believe it is increasingly incumbent upon us as community members of conscience to form more robust and effective networks with the intention of resisting U.S. immigration enforcement. Currently, I do not believe we in San Marcos are doing all we can to keep our neighbors safe from the cruelty of the various agencies that make up the U.S. immigration-enforcement network (ICE and CBP especially).
What are we doing in San Marcos to build the power necessary to shut down the camps? One of those camps, a stone’s throw away from our town in Karnes City, has gone virtually unchallenged, seeing only a series of small, scattered protests rather than concerted efforts to oppose its existence. Members of our own community have been stolen from us and taken to the South Texas Detention Center in Pearsall. How are we building the networks of shelter and trust necessary to keep people out of ICE custody?
On Friday at 7:45 p.m., Mano Amiga is hosting a Vigil Against Detention on the steps of the old county courthouse. Those interested in fighting against America’s policies of internment should attend, and help the assembled answer these questions in ways we mean to act upon.
Sincerely,
Tomas Diaz de Leon
