Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) previewed the San Marcos Rattlers in their magazine for the 2019 season.
DCTF noted that San Marcos should have much more experience than 2018’s squad. The Rattlers return 28 letterman and 13 starters — seven on offense and six on defense — good for the third most in District 26-6A in both categories.
The magazine lists senior safety Andres Alonzo, offensive lineman Elijah Barrera, wide receiver Takai Madgett, cornerback Quddus Ogunbase, tight end Ronnie Perez and junior safety Kannon Webb as the team’s players to watch. Offensive lineman Easthan Mendez is listed as San Marcos’ top junior. Fellow offensive lineman Jacob Pinkston was named the top sophomore.
The Rattlers are projected to finish eighth in the district according to DCTF. San Marcos has the lowest enrollment among the schools with 2,344 students.
Converse Judson was picked to win the league title, with Cibolo Steele, Smithson Valley and Schertz Clemens also qualifying for the playoffs. Judson senior quarterback Michael Chandler III was selected as the Preseason Offensive MVP, with Steele senior defensive back Jaylon Jones earning the Preseason Defensive MVP honor.
The Rattlers’ 2019 season kicks off on Aug. 30 at Buda Hays, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
