Dykes was born February 10, 1938 to James H. Hawkes and Priscilla Chavez Hawkes in Albuquerque, NM. He passed from this life on June 21, 2019, surrounded by his family, his body no longer able to overcome multiple compromises. He is one of eight siblings and learned early to look after others. He was drafted into the Army and received an honorable discharge. He was trained as an aircraft mechanic and loved working on helicopters. He worked a diverse range of fields throughout his life such as a telephone lineman, a personal fitness trainer, various construction jobs and as a counselor directly caring for head-injured clients. He didn’t shrink from work because it was difficult. At age 75 he often outworked much younger men doing concrete work. He had a can-do attitude and was relied upon wherever he was employed. He lived by honesty and integrity in his work and was a good provider for his family. Outside of work, he was an inveterate reader until he could not see to read. He enjoyed people and was able to talk to just about anyone. He was a lifelong learner and liked doing surname research and learning new words in German and Czech. Most importantly, he was baptized into Christ as a young man and tried to follow the Bible to the best of his ability in his later years. Dykes will be fondly remembered for his love of God, his love of his family, helping others, growing an amazing garden, passion for fitness, and perseverance through major difficulties. He is survived by his wife, four children, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a step-mother- Kika, five siblings- Dallas, Marlene, Danny, Mike and Elizabeth, along with various nephews and nieces. He is missed.
