Bobcats drop road series to South Alabama, host Texas

The Bobcats dropped their conference road series to the South Alabama Jaguars, losing the rubber match 10-2 on Sunday.

The loss drops Texas State’s overall record to 19-20 overall and 8-10 in conference play.

In the first game of the series, the Bobcats scored first when junior third baseman Chase Mora hit a solo home run into left field to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

South Alabama responded by scoring nine unanswered in the next three innings. Going into the sixth inning, the Bobcats trailed 9-1.

Not backing down, Texas State attempted their comeback in the same inning.

Sophomore shortstop Ryne Farber jumped started the offense with a two-run RBI double, cutting the deficit down to 9-3.

Later in the seventh inning, the Bobcats struck again when senior designated hitter Austin Eaton connected with a RBI single. In the same at-bat, a South Alabama throwing error on the hit by sophomore Samson Pugh allowed another run to cross as Texas State made it a 9-5 game.

South Alabama then responded by scoring six unanswered runs to seal the Bobcat defeat at 155.

Looking to even the series, the Bobcats once again used a fast start in the first inning. Junior first baseman scored first for the Bobcats, hitting an RBI single to put Texas State up 1-0. In the next at-bat, senior catcher Austin Munguia hit a two-run home run, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Bobcats later added another run in the top of the sixth inning when senior designated hitter Ian Collier hit into a groundout to score Munguia from third, making it a 4-0 game.

South Alabama cut into the lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth before the Bobcats added on to their lead.

Defray hit an RBI single to push the Bobcat lead back to four runs before Munguia hit a tworun RBI single, making the score 7-1.

South Alabama again made another comeback in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs as both teams entered the ninth inning with Texas State leading 7-4.

Mora added an insurance run for the Bobcats with an RBI double to push the lead to 8-4. South Alabama scored two runs in the ninth inning but were unable to complete the comeback as Texas State evened the series with an 8-6 win.

In the rubber match on Saturday, Texas State struck again, scoring on a Munguia RBI single to go up 1-0.

South Alabama tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run before Farber gave the Bobcats the lead back in the top of the third, hitting a solo home run of his own to put Texas State up 2-1.

Unfortunately for Texas State, it marked the last time the Bobcats held the lead. The Jaguars scored nine unanswered runs to win 10-2 and take the conference series.

The Bobcats return home Tuesday night in a massive showdown with the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns.

The Longhorns are coming off a three-game sweep of the Auburn Tigers and a midweek win over the UTRGV Vaqueros. In their last meeting this season, Texas State defeated the Longhorns 5-3 in the Bobcats fourth straight win over Texas in Austin.

First pitch for Texas State-Texas is set for 6 p.m.
