Jeffrey Brown curates and organizes First Tuesday SMTX, a monthly community film series, bringing award-winning, indie films to the big screen for the first time in San Marcos on the first Tuesday of each month. He will discuss the film series and his own background in film at the next meeting of the Rotary Club of San Marcos on Wednesday, April 23. Rotary meets at noon at the VFW Hall, located at 1701 Hunter Rd. Visitors are always welcome.
First Tuesday was recognized by the Downtown Association for Best Innovation in 2023. It celebrates its two-year anniversary on May 13 with the film Get Back Up about the local rock band Blue October. The films are screened at the Price Center on San Antonio Street at 7 p.m.
Brown lived in the Czech Republic for 20 years before returning to the Texas Hill Country. He leads Big Day Pictures and has produced and directed award-winning narrative features and documentaries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the USA, screened at major international festivals including Sundance, Cannes, Tribeca, SXSW, Rotterdam and the New York Film Festival. His films have been released in cinemas internationally as well as on leading streaming outlets such as Netflix, HBO, Showtime, PBS, Amazon, Hulu, ESPN and AMC. Recent highlights include Runaway Radio, about Houston’s KLOL 101 FM, Cowboys, about big outfit cowboys, Nothing Stays The Same: The Story of The Saxon Pub and No No: A Documentary about African American baseball pitcher Dock Ellis’s legendary no-hitter. Altogether, Brown has produced 40 films, screened in over 100 festivals and 50 countries.
In addition to producing films himself, Brown also likes to share his knowledge about filmmaking in a documentary masterclass. It has been offered in Europe and the U.S. over the past decade, most recently in San Marcos in January and February 2025.
