LBJ Museum golf tournament held at Kissing Tree

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos celebrated the 22nd Annual Ted Breihan Open Golf Tournament on April 4th at the Kissing Tree Golf Club.

This year’s golf tournament was a close one with first and second place ending with a tie. The golf course at Kissing Trees uses USGA standards to break a tie. First place went to the team sponsored by John Navarette and included Scott Yarbrough, Rodney Cobb, Richard Merritt and Ken Clayborn.

Second place was the team sponsored by Sunset Bowling Lanes with Tyler Compton, John Gates, Chris Sanso and Billy Smith. Carbajal Associates sponsored the third place team with Peter Quintero, Jesse Sanchez, Victor Wallace and Jerry DeLeon. Other team sponsors included Ted Breihan Electric, Frost Bank, Elliott Electric Supply, Inc., Rexel San Marcos, Frost Bank, Wineaux Wine Bar and Texas Roadhouse.

Winning closest to the pin on #4 was Adam Parker and on pin #15 was Richard Merritt. The cannon launch, a fan favorite, was back this year. The winner that launched their ball the furthest was Billy Smith.

Hole sponsors for this year’s tournament included, Texas State Political Science Department, Melissa and Art Millicam, Elliott Electric Supply, Chloe and John Navarrertte, H-E-B, Rexel USA, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, and Benchmark Insurance, Chuck Nash Auto Group and JD Martin.

“This year we are pleased to be celebrating our 22nd anniversary of the LBJ Museum’s Ted Breihan Memorial Golf Tournament and appreciate all the support we have received from longtime sponsors. We are also delighted to welcome new sponsors to this event,” said Wayne Kraemer, LBJ Museum board president. “In addition to our sponsors we would like to thank the teams that entered and Kissing Tree Golf Club for making it a wonderful event. We are thankful that we can continue to honor Ted Breihan in this special way with this tournament that he loved.”

Breihan was a community leader for decades and served on the museum’s board of directors from 2000 to 2014. A 1953 graduate of Southwest Texas, now Texas State University, he served on the San Marcos City Council from 1974 to 1980 as well as other community organizations such as the Southside Community Center, the Scheib Center and the United Methodist Church.The city was saddened when Breihan passed away on Nov. 17, 2021 at the age of 95.

This year’s raffle celebrated the wineries and distilleries in our area, and the museum would like to extend gratitude to the following companies: Wineaux Wine Bar, Dripping Springs Distillery, Limestone Terrace, Texas Roadhouse, Root Cellar, San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, The Taproot, Twin Liquor, Messina Hof Winery, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Proof Liquor Deli and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

The LBJ Museum, located at 131 North Guadalupe Street in downtown San Marcos, features exhibits honoring President Lyndon Johnson, the 36th president, who graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, now Texas State University, in 1930. The museum is free to the public and open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
