Jason Mellard, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Practice & Director of the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University. He will speak to the Rotary Club of San Marcos on April 16 about the Center.
Mellard is a cultural historian of the modern South and Southwest. He received his PhD in American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. His first book, “Progressive Country: How the 1970s Transformed the Texan in Popular Culture,” explores the intersections of political change and popular culture in the Sunbelt South’s largest state. At TXST, he works with the Center for Texas Music History on the publication of The Journal of Texas Music History and the weekly radio program, This Week in Texas Music History.
The Center for Texas Music History focuses on the preservation and study of Southwestern music history, emphasizing how Texas music reflects the rich history and cultural diversity of the Southwest. CTMH aims to celebrate and understand our region’s unique and diverse cultural heritage through music. The Center offers graduate and undergraduate courses, along with a variety of research and publishing projects.
Rotary meets Wednesdays at 11:45 a.m. at the VFW Hall at 1701 Hunter Road. Visitors are always welcome at Rotary meetings.
