TXST BASEBALL
Three weeks after suffering a 19-3 beat down from Baylor, Texas State went on the road into Waco and extracted revenge, beating the Bears 6-2.
The victory improves Texas State’s record to 16-16 overall.
The Bobcats struck first against the Bears in the top of the second inning when Chase Mora hit an RBI single through the left side to put Texas State up 1-0.
Texas State added another run in the top of the third inning as Coy Defury hit an RBI single up the middle, putting Texas State up 2-0.
In the sixth inning, the Bobcats continued to do more damage offensively.
Freshman Zachary Gingrich hit an RBI double to make it a 3-0 lead before sophomore Samson Pugh came up to bat.
Pugh hit a single into center field but the Baylor outfielder missed the ball, allowing it to roll back towards the fence. The Baylor error allowed Zingrich to score from second while Pugh advanced all the way around the bases before sliding into home plate to complete the Little League home run, giving the Bobcats a commanding 5-0 lead.
Mora added the final touch from the Bobcat offense, smashing a solo home run over the wall in left field, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Baylor attempted to make a comeback in the top of the ninth inning, scoring two runs with no outs. However, senior pitcher Matthew Tippie slammed the door on a potential Bears’ comeback, striking out the next two batters before forcing a ground out to seal the win.
Starting pitcher Austin Eaton earned his second win of the season, throwing four innings while allowing just three hits, no earned runs, no walks and striking out one batter. Relief pitcher Braylen Timmins pitched two innings, allowing just one hit, no earned runs, no walks and striking out three batters.
Tippie, who earned his first save of the season, pitched the final three innings, allowing just two hits, one earned run, one walk and striking out six batters.
Texas State ends their five-game road stand this weekend when the Bobcats host the No. 24 ranked Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Southern Miss is coming off a conference series loss to Marshall while dropping their mid-week non-conference game to the No. 10 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
Texas State starts play against Southern Miss 7 p.m. Friday night for River State Night and Alumni Weekend.
