If you’d like a change of pace, consider growing your own strawberries. I’m told these are one of the easiest and most versatile fruits to grow in any space and that they do well in our area.

Strawberries are both edible and ornamental, with white flowers, tasty fruit and red fall color. You can grow them in a container or as a ground cover or even in a hanging basket.

A variety that comes highly recommended is Start DeLizz, which can be grown from seeds in early spring and will produce several harvests the first year, even during hot summer months.

Some nurseries may have strawberry plants available and many garden catalogues offer seeds or starter plants.

If you’re really serious about this incredible edible, don’t miss the 78th annual Strawberry Festival, set for April 11, 12 and 13 in Poteet, Texas. The festival features lots of music and many displays of the featured star of the show. If it has lasted almost 80 years, you know they’re doing something right.

And if you’re not a fan of strawberries, consider Baby Cakes blackberries, Silver Dollar blueberries or Brown Turkey figs.

I personally enjoy the Sweet Karoline blackberries you can sometimes find at H-E-B. Yum.
