The San Marcos Daily Record staff gives recommendations on what to do in our community
A BUSY WEEKEND OF STEAM, CHILI, KITES AND SONGWRITER CONTESTS
There are way too many cool events going on this weekend, but I’ll try to be brief. See the front page article for more information on the STEAM fair at San Marcos High School. The Dam Chili Cookoff, which benefits the Youth Service Bureau, will be tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m in downtown Martindale. Enjoy chili, live music and a silent auction — all for the kids! Another Martindale event on Saturday is Kite Day, which will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. at Allen Bates Park, located at 405 FM-1979. Get your kids and kites and head on out there for some family fun provided by the Martindale Community Library. The last event will be another San Marcos event that occurs from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Zelicks Icehouse, located at 336 West Hopkins Street. KZSM is hosting a singer/songwriter contest. Entry fees are $15, and only the first 20 artists to arrive that day will participate.
GREEN HERON ARTISAN MARKET
In this world, there are few things sweeter than good friends gathering together to read, eating delicious foods, sharing art and listening to music. This weekend, Green Heron Bookshop will bring all of this together beneath its Steamboat Victorian roof. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the bookshop will host a special spring artisan market featuring 15 vendors selling jewelry, cookies and apothecary goods. A Poetry on the Porch open mic will take place from 3 to 4 p.m., featuring the talented voices of local poets and Texas State MFAs. In need of some intuitive guidance? The event will feature astrology readings with Tuesday, and did I mention the cookies? There will be homemade organic sugar cookies by Bitsies Tailored Cookies. Check her out on Instagram @_bitsies_ and while you’re there, have a look at Green Heron Bookshop as well at @ greenheronbookshop.
SAN MARCOS STUDIO TOUR
Tonight starts the third annual San Marcos Studio Tour! See a group show of the 87 artists at the Kick Off Party tonight at 7 p.m. at MotherShip Studios, located at 20027 San Marcos Hwy. There will be live music, food and art vendors, a raffle and tons of artists of all mediums!
Take home a keepsake photo strip at the Photo Booth provided by San Marcos Film Lab.
The tour spans the first two weekends of April: both Saturday and Sunday of this weekend (April 5 and 6) and the next (April 12 and 13) with open studios from 12 to 6 p.m. each day. You can access the free map and digital catalog online at studiotoursmtx.com
