Bobcats fall at Marshall on walk-off home run in series loss

Texas State dropped their road series against Marshall after playing a doubleheader on Saturday, winning the first game 5-3 before losing the second game 5-4 in extra innings.

The Bobcats’ overall record drops to 21-10 and 5-4 in conference play with Texas State sitting tied in fifth place and are two games behind Louisiana Monroe and Georgia Southern in first place.

In the first game of the series on Friday, Texas State trailed 5-0 after the first inning when Mar- shall scored on an RBI double and a grand slam.

The Bobcat offense scored their first runs of the game following RBI singles from junior Megan Kelnar and senior Ciara Trahan in the top of the fifth inning.

In the top of the seventh, junior Aiyana Coleman hit a solo homer to cut the lead 5-3 but the Bobcats were unable to complete the comeback.

The first game of the doubleheader played on Saturday saw Texas State take the lead in the top of the first inning when junior Keely Williams hit a solo home run to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

Marshall answered back in the same inning with a three-run home run to take their first lead of the game at 3-1.

In the next at-bat, junior Kate Bubela hit an RBI single through the right, cutting the Bobcat deficit down to 3-2.

Coleman gave the lead back to the Bobcats in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a two-run home run and making the score 4-3.

Kelnar added another run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single into center to seal the Bobcat win at 5-3 and even the series.

Sophomore pitcher M adison Azua earned her 11th win of the season, throwing a complete game and allowing just three hits, three earned runs, two walks while striking out five batters.

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Bocbats take the early lead on a two-run RBI single by Bubela to go up 2-0.

Marshall added on a run in the third inning following a dropped third strike, making it a 2-1 game.

In the top of the seventh, Texas State added on to their lead following an RBI double from Trahan to go up 3-1.

But Marshall sent the game into extra innings following a two-run RBI single, tying the game at 3-3.

The Bobcats answered back in the top of the eighth with a Coleman RBI single, putting Texas State back in front 4-3. Marshall tied the game once again with a solo home run in the next atbat before winning the game in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off home run to win 5-4.

The Bobcats are back on the road this Wednesday in a showdown with former conference rival Sam Houston. Both Texas State and Sam Houston will complete their game that was played on February 18 before being halted due weather conditions before playing their originally scheduled road game. The first game will resume in the top of the fifth inning with Texas State leading Sam Houston 7-1.

Play will start at 4 p.m. with the second game to be played shortly after.
