LOCAL EVENTS

San Marcos has long celebrated icons from the defunct Aquarena Springs theme park such as Ralph the Swimming Pig and the many mermaids that graced its waters but finally the underwater clown Glurpo is getting his dues. The first annual Glurpo Fest will be held Sunday April 13 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Triple Six Social, located at 329 Cheatham St. The event is free and family friendly with endless activities for kids and the kid inside us all.

The lineup for the day is stacked with as much fun as they could fit in five hours with live music all day. There will be a clown parade that everyone is welcome to join with clowning shenanigans provided by local performers Molly J Clown, Batty the Clown, Sunny Rae Clown and more. The master of ceremonies will be Atom Von Arndt who is sure to keep the spirits high but not dry since there will be a dunk tank. There will be face painting open to kids of all ages from 1 to 100. Be ready to dress to impress for the costume contest and a trophy might be in one’s future. There will also be a talent show open to the public as well, which will highlight the many gifts and skills that San Marcos residents have to offer.

There will be a local arts market.

Aquarena Springs was a mid century theme park located on Spring Lake, the headwaters of the San Marcos River, now home of the Meadows Center. Among its menagerie of mermaids, dancing chickens and swimming pigs was an underwater clown named Glurpo. The park closed in 1996 but the memories of these characters live on. To honor the history of San Marcos, Triple Six Social and the Glurpo Society are putting on this family friendly community event.
