Bobcats score seven unanswered in comeback victory over Coastal

TXST SOFTBALL

Texas State scored seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to complete both the road comeback and avoid the sweep in the Bobcats 1412 win over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

The win improves the Bobcats overall record to 20-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Coming into Sunday’s game, Texas State lost the first game to Coastal 6-0 before dropping the second game 5-4.

The Bobcats found themselves trailing 2-0 in the first inning following a two-run homer by the Chanticleers. But junior first baseman Aiyana Coleman put the Bobcats on the board in the second inning with a solo home run, cutting the lead down to 2-1. In the same at-bat, junior designated player Karmyn Bass hit an RBI double, tying the game up. Bass later scored on a Coastal Carolina throwing error, giving the Bobcats the lead at 3-2.

The Chanticleers answered back with seven unanswered runs to retake the lead at 9-5 going into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, junior outfielder Keely Williams put the Bobcats back on the board with an RBI single. Williams later scored on a Coleman RBI single, cutting the Coastal Carolina lead down to 9-7.

The Chanticleers once again answered, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead up to 12-7. However, it marked the last time the Coastal Carolina offense touched home plate.

In the sixth inning, Coleman blasted her second homer of the day, hitting a two-run shot over the right field wall to make it a 12-9 game going into the top of the seventh.

Freshman Mayson Garrett started the offensive attack with a two-run home run, making it a 12-11 game. The Bobcats tied the game at 12-12 when Coleman hit a sacrifice fly in left field with the bases loaded. Senior outfielder Ciara Trahan then cleared the bases with a two-run RBI single, allowing the Bobcats to enter the bottom of the seventh with a 14-12 lead.

Junior pitcher Emma Strood closed out the inning for the Bobcats to seal both the team win and her ninth win of the season.

The Bobcats return home Wednesday to battle the archrival UTSA Roadrunners. UTSA is coming off a conference series loss to Wichita State, who Texas State beat 5-0 earlier in the week.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
