SMCISD moves ahead with 2023 bond projects

SAN MARCOS CISD

During the regularly scheduled San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District board meeting last Monday there was an operations update given by SMCISD Executive Director of Operations Bernie Sandoval. The items for action included the consideration of the proposed Guaranteed Maximum Price for two construction projects. This includes the Mendez Elementary School replacement project and Phase 1 additions and renovations to San Marcos High School. Both of these projects are a part of the SMCISD 2023 bond. The Mendez Elementary School replacement project will be led by Core Construction Services of Texas, Inc with a GMP of $58,109,006. The start date will be the end of March with a completion date estimated for June of 2026. The projected demolition completion date for the existing Mendez Elementary School would be in November 2026.

“I just want to say how excited I am to see us reach this milestone with Mendez Elementary School,” said Miguel Arredondo, SMCISD Trustee. He brought up the question of work hours since the construction will be surrounded by a neighborhood. Conner Wade, the project manager from Core Construction, ensured that once construction starts the specifics of work hours will be communicated to the principal and the immediate housing around the construction site.

Sandoval explained the GMP and timeline of the San Marcos High School additions and renovations, which will be led by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Inc. Phase 1 will include administration renovations, utility relocations, a band practice pad and parking additions. The GMP for this project is $4,868,277 with construction to begin summer of this year. The original GMP estimate was $5,379,157, which means the district is saving $510,880. Phase 2 construction is projected for September 2025 to August 2027, which will include additions to the band hall and the black box theatre with renovations and relocation of performance programs. Phase 3 construction is projected for December 2025 to August 2027 with special education renovations and new classroom additions. The estimated GMP for these phases is $28,830,910. The board approved the GMP’s for both projects with a 6-0 vote.
